  1. State Bank of India launched Mobicash Mobile Wallet to promote cashless transactions.

  2. ICICI Bank launched Eazypay application for sellers to accept and process payments.

Business News:

  1. The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors in December 2016 approved USD 235 million for the Bihar Rural Roads Project.

  2. A MoU has been signed between National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and National Aluminium Co. Ltd (NALCO) for the establishment of a 2.4 GW coal power project at Gajmara, Odisha.

  3. India and Tajikistan have signed agreements related to double taxation avoidance (DTAA), money laundering and other areas.

  4. India and Kyrgyzstan have signed six agreements to boost bilateral cooperation.

  5. India and Bhutan signed a MoU for extending technical cooperation in infrastructure engineering.

  6. India and Portugal have signed seven agreements to boost the bilateral relations between the two nations.

  7. India and Sri Lanka signed a MoU to construct rainwater harvesting systems in the northern Jaffna district.

  8. India and Vietnam have signed an agreement pertaining to Cyber Security.

  5. According to International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), Lionel Messi as the world’s best playmaker of 2016.

  3. The 31st National Consumer Day is observed on 21 December 2016 across India with the theme ‘Alternate Consumer Disputes Redressal’.

  4. The 21st National Youth Festival will be held in Rohtak, Haryana from 12th to 16th January 2017. The theme for the year is,”Youth for Digital India.”

Obituary:

  1. Environmentalist Anupam Mishra passed away on 19th December 2016 in Delhi. He was 68.

  2. Prominent astronomer Vera Rubin passed away on 25 December 2016. She was 88.

  3. Dinanath Bhargava, the man who designed the National Emblem passed away on 24th December 2016. He was 89.

  4. John Berger, the Booker Prize-winning novelist, passed away on 2nd January 2017. He was 90.

  5. Former CM of Punjab, Surjit Singh Barnala passed away on 14 January 2017. He was 91.

  6. American astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, the last man to walk on Moon, passed away on 16 January 2017. He was 82.
